WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

In early spring the snow covered larger areas than average but the phenology of snow melt was normal. Summer was warm and dry, with many uncloudy days and without significant changes in weather. Late in July there were short, cold snaps.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

Breeding conditions:

Numbers of most species had not yet peaked. There were large numbers of Ptarmigans Lagopus mutus. Raptors and Long-tailed Skuas were more numerous than in 1993. However, negative effects from both avian and terrestrial predators (Common Weasel Mustela erminea, Red Fox Vulpes vulpes, Sable Maries zibellina and Brown Bear Ursus arctos) were low. In areas where wild and domestic Reindeer concentrated, between the upper Anadyr and Anyui Rivers, they sometimes trampled birds nests and ate both eggs and chicks. The number and breeding success of most wader species was above, or close to, average. The most successful breeders were Long-tailed Skua, Great Knot, Grey-tailed Tattler Heteroscelus brevipes, Ruff, Terek Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper.
